"Eso es Salsa" | Organic Cotton Latin Dance Streetwear Tee
In the 1960s in Caracas, Venezuelan radio host Phidias Danilo Escalona, known as El Bigotón, introduced Afro-Caribbean dance music on the radio. According to the story, in 1968 he spontaneously described the music he was hearing with the exclamation:
“¡Eso es salsa!”
The phrase stuck and became the name of an entire music culture.
Salsa, however, is not a single rhythm – it is a blend of many Caribbean styles. The words on the back of this shirt represent salsa’s true roots:
GUARACHA · XVIII–XIX
RUMBA · XIX
SON · XIX
MAMBO · 1940
CHA-CHA-CHÁ · 1950
TIMBA · 1990
In the 1960s and 1970s, Latin communities in New York and record labels like Fania Records began using the word salsa to market this music to the world.
